Why a professional garden electrician
Here at Kingson Electrical we know how much difference lighting can make to your garden. For over 20 years as professional garden electricians we have helped customers turn their gardens into extensions of their homes. We use lighting to enhance and elevate spaces of all shapes and sizes.
Lighting is a difficult thing to get right, not just in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of safety. We never consider one without considering the other. You can be rest assured that any garden lighting project installed by Kingson Electrical will not only look the part, but will meet all safety standards and regulations.
Whilst most projects are straightforward, it’s comforting to know that we have the ability to find a solution to almost any problem. From carefully positioned cable joints, to optimally placed transformers. We have got two decades worth of projects to look back on to find an answer to almost any light scaping problem.
We spoke to a customer recently that caused us to reflect again on the amount of experience we’d accumulated over the years. This customer’s garden lighting system was broken and she approached us for help. Upon arriving we discovered what our garden electricians have come to refer to as ‘garden sins’.
Garden sins
A ‘garden sin’ is a recurring theme that a house electrician does when they have decided to take on an outdoor lighting installation. While most house electricians are perfectly skilled and excellent at their indoor trade, many of them don’t realise that external lighting works are a completely different ball game. In our experience, garden lighting installed by your average house electrician won’t last more than a few weeks or months before something goes wrong. Usually due to adverse weather which flags up all kinds of errors such as poor circuit design, bad transformer placement or light fittings that aren’t fit for purpose.
House electricians charge a similar rate to garden electricians, but because they’re usually already ‘on the job’ working on someone’s home, they get asked to ply their trade in the garden too. This leads to many ‘garden sins’, including but not limited to:
- Junction boxes lazily placed at each light fitting, usually buried in the mud to hide them.
- Using 230 volt fittings – particularly GU10 which, in our experience, are nothing but trouble.
- Not using waterproof glands, leading to water damage
- Not using the correct cable gland for the chosen cable, particularly armoured cable
- When the garden lighting system trips out it also turns off critical aspects of the house, including fridges, freezers and power circuits.
- Installation of flood lighting that washes the beauty out of the garden rather than creating a pleasant contrast between the light and darkness.
Our number one fight in a garden is keeping water out of our electrical connections, be that the great British weather, or the irrigation system that keeps the plants looking their best. If we can keep the water out, your garden electrical installation will last for many years without any issues.
What we do
Our garden electricians at Kingson Electrical will:
- Install proven, reliable products that will give many years of service
- Ensure the electrical system is installed in the ‘Kingson Electrical’ way, leaving the garden free from electrical rubbish, picking up those annoying off-cuts of cable and leaving a beautiful lighting system that is installed sympathetically to enhance the garden and its natural beauty.
- Design an electrical system that suits the layout of the lighting, electrical outlets, pond pumps and external heaters to ensure longevity of service and limiting the impact of a fault in the garden from tripping circuits that are critical within the house.
- Install products that enhance the features that you enjoy, highlighting steps and paths using our extensive understanding of beams angles, glare guards and lux output to ensure the lighting is subtle rather than looking like a sports field or an airport runway.
- Be able to service and supply replacement parts should things go wrong.

If you want a reliable long lasting garden electrical installation, pay for a specialist. There are no shortcuts. It’s simply one of those things that’s hard to do well, even for experienced house electricians, and needs better regulation. Here at Kingson Electrical, our garden electricians pride themselves on being the best. Let us help you make your garden electrics a success.
