A garden lit in phases at Totteridge Common
A long-running collaboration with the landscaper, lighting the garden as it was built rather than retrofitting it afterwards — and treated by the client as part of the design, not an add-on.

The challenge
The garden was being rebuilt in stages over an extended programme, with new levels, planting and hard landscaping arriving phase by phase. Lighting specified at the end would have meant cutting into finished surfaces and compromising on fitting positions.
Our approach
We were brought in early and stayed on site alongside the landscaper throughout. That gave us the opportunity to put light wherever something had been made — a wall, a specimen tree, a change of level — with cable routes laid in before surfaces were closed up. The client gave us the trust and the time to get it right rather than rushing to a fixed date.
The outcome
A scheme that reads as part of the garden rather than something added to it, with every fitting concealed in daylight. The relationship has continued through subsequent phases of the garden.
