Terraced levels lit across a north London garden
A steeply terraced garden where lighting the level changes made the space both safe to move through after dark and far larger to the eye.

The challenge
The garden dropped away from the house across several terraces. After dark it was effectively unusable — the steps were hazardous, and from the house the garden simply ended at the edge of the terrace.
Our approach
Recessed fittings to every step and retaining wall, deliberately shielded so the light falls on the tread rather than into the eye. Uplighting to the specimen trees at the far boundary to draw the eye through and give the garden depth from indoors.
The outcome
The garden is now used through the evening across all three terraces, and from the kitchen the planting at the far end reads as part of the room.
